Don't forget that a closing P tag will automatically put a carriage return in by design. It's not wordpress or the RTE that's doing it, it's in the HTML spec.
Still bloody annoying though!
For the record I would recommend turning off the RTE as soon as you can through your options.
When you get fed up of Performancing (I did), try W Bloggar. It has its own little quirks but is a great little program.
