Comments for 'Blog in isolation': comparison of coComment, co.comments and commentful - Digging in a Habari sandpit

Thanks for this. Very useful. Lots to digest - but a good summary. I might stick with co.mment.

I'll have to give co.mments a try. When I wanted to do this before, the frigging extension was so slow I never used it.

Which I should have, because it's by my internet-friend Assaf: http://blog.labnotes.org/

I love how all the services have the same name.

    Hi,
Thanks for the extensive comparison. As you said "coComment is the most feature rich and potentially powerful", and likely some extra simple steps are necessary to support this. We are still trying to make it as simple and reliable as possible. I read you were having some trouble with cocomment, please let me know so we can look into it. Since our V2 upgrade we have fixed most of the bugs, but some still to be fixed.
You can reach me at joaquin@cocomment.com
    Thanks
    Joaquin

Andy, Jitendra from SezWho (thanks for the install and it looks great)...We find that most users are overwhelmed with the number of browser plugins that do all sort of things...We considered having a browser plugin (and we might very well have one in the future) but decided that pitching our value directly to the site owners was a better way to go...

Also let me know what you think of Sezwho and how your users like it...also check out your stats at the sezWho my account page...

This has been a soft spot for me as I've made my way through all three now I'm at Commentful. I loved the RSS feeds from co.comments, but I like the simplicity of commentful. coComment was simply overkill, and the JS it loaded on each and every page drove me crazy. It's way to much to something very little.

If Commentful fixed their RSS feeds then I would be set, or if Assaf started developing co.comments again.

Let me add small remark regarding coComment service: it is avaliable for some time, but not spread wide in the internet, that coComment provides Internet Explorer extension. So, if you're the IE user (just like me), let's go to coComment website to grab it from there :)

Let me leave one more remark: you can put coComment to the same list with Disquss and IntenseDebate :) it is able to manage conversations this way as well.

I've used all three now. I REALLY liked commentful, but I'm using firefox (on linux xubuntu) and the extension doesn't work. It never turns green when there are new comments. The last time I tried cocomment it so slowed my web browsing down that I had to delete it. I'm using co.mment now and I'm loving it so far. I hate having to have the bookmark toolbar up though. I'd rather have a plugin that I could add to the browser toolbar. Other than that...it's by far my favorite so far.

I've never used Commentful but have tried the other 2. I think there's too much junk on Co.comment and I eventually had to disable it when it was interfering with another community site that I was on. I really like co.mment but the fact that there's A LOT of downtime is making me really frustrated which prompted me to google for new ways to track comments and led me to your post. I think I'll give Commentful a shot.

One more thing... One thing that bothered me about co.mments is that there was no button. It's a bookmarklet, so you have to have the bookmark toolbar. I have a small screen, so removing a toolbar gives me more real estate. The answer is creating a co.mments button. You can do that by following the instructions here:

Thanks for this! I was trying to decide between the three services and this really helped me out. One update—the commentful FF plugin has not yet been updated for FF3.

    Hi Josh

Glad you found the post useful. Apologies for the layout of the images (which got mangled in my migration to Habari).

Disqus addresses a slightly different problem but can also be used to track all your comments (albeit just on Disqus enabled blogs).

I was using co.mments for a while, but the site kept going down and was completely unreliable, so I left the service towards the middle of last year. Have they made any improvements to uptime and reliability? Because the other two just don't suit my needs...

Sameer - time and Web 2.0 software moves on.

I now find Disqus meets almost of my commenting needs.

You might want to check out backtype.com as a means of tracking all your blog comments (including non-Disqus and historical comments)

Thanks for mentioning BackType; we help track comments by person and topic. We'll be adding subscribe by post very soon. Would love to hear what you think -- we'll announce it on our blog, twitter, etc.

Thanks Andy. Been playing around with Backtype, and it's been okay so far. Still exploring though...
