    For my monthly train passes, metrolink (southern california) requires people to use automated machines, within a certain unspecified time window near the end/beginning of the month. Naturally, this overloads the system during rush hours, often the symptom is credit/debit card rejection for no apparent reason, causing people to try it again, and again, making the line longer, upsetting the people who need to catch the next infrequent train... I've learned to make a special trip to the station to avoid this. I've seen it happen on one machine and not on the one next to it, then the reverse a few minutes later.
