Or cop out entirely, and get a AMP installation that's all-in-one. The Windows one I kinda like is Server2Go. It contains Apache, MySQL, PHP, and PHPMyAdmin all in a single zip, with a tiny front-end to launch it all. Best bit? Portable. Stick it on a USB drive or something, and fire it up where/when you want to.

Good stuff for playing with any PHP-based stuff without actually, y'know installing things for real.

You already know the decision you will make. You will just spend days trying to justify it, before doing it anyway.
