I felt quite sorry for the poor whale - I mean wouldn't you give up the will to live if you were approached by a reporter from the News of The World?

Although the story had a sad end, my favourite moment was during the rescue attempt, when a spokesman for the Port of London Authority, by his own admission "not a mammal expert", said in a TV news interview that the whale was "a long way from being home and dry". At least there were people at the scene who knew a bit more about whales.
